Andrea Atkins, one of our Thrive Hubs, Plymouth residents recently impressively won Joules’ ‘Design Your Own Welly’ competition, judged by Tom Joule himself! Andrea is an architect and also a founding partner of Crayon Architecture and Design.
With her “passion for design” and “playing around with colour combinations and patterns,” Andrea decided to enter Joules’ competition to design a new pattern for their wellington boot range! The prize was very appealing too – the winner would receive a holiday worth £5,000 and their winning design on a wellie boot, which would be sold at Joules, with the proceeds going to charity. Andrea entered the competition with a pattern that “involved houses, inspired by coastal towns throughout Devon and Cornwall.”
On the day before Christmas Eve, Andrea found out she won the competition, but had to struggle to keep it a secret until it was announced in January 2016! Andrea describes how it felt to be the winner of the competition and her experience with the incredible prize she received: “I was so excited to be the winner and it gave me confidence in my design capabilities outside of the architecture field. Since the competition I have been on the winners holiday, which was with Forest Holidays in the Forest of Dean, in a log cabin. As part of the prize I was able to take friends and family, where we enjoyed spa treatments, segway in the forest, a night vision walk and had our own private chef. Joules have been overwhelmingly kind with gifts and contact regarding the manufacturing of the wellington boots, which went on sales last month!”
